How to Get to Siena

How to Get to Siena by Air, Bus, Train and Car:

This car looked a little lost

Being in the centre of Tuscany, and surrounded by Pisa, Florence, Arezzzo and Grosseto, Siena is easily reachable from any of these Tuscan towns.

By Air

If you’re flying into Italy, the closest international airports to Siena are the Aeroporto di Firenze (Florence Airport) and Galileo Galilei Pisa Airport.

From Florence Airport there’s a bus service to Firenze S.M. Novella (Florence Central Train Station) where you can catch the train to Siena.
From Pisa Airport, there is a coach transfer service to Siena via Florence. It picks up passengers at Firenze S.M. Novella train station.

If your’re flying into the Bologna Marconi Airport, the Sena Autolinee connects Bologna Airport with Siena (travel time is about 2 hrs 30 minutes).

By Train

From Florence – There is an hourly direct train service from Firenze Santa Maria Novella (Florence central station) to Siena. There is also a regional service from Empoli to Siena which leaves every half hour (travel time is roughly an hour)
From Pisa – Trains from Pisa Centrale go to Empoli where you can change for the Empoli to Siena train.
From Rome – From Rome, you’ll need to take the train to Firenze SM Novella and then change for the Siena train.

Note: that the Siena train station is at Piazza Fratelli Roselli, about 2 km north from the historical centre. There is a bus terminal in front of the station and regular buses run from Siena station to Piazza del Sale (bus numbers 3, 8, 10, 17 and 77). From Piazza del Sale to the train station, catch bus 17.

By Bus

Buses may be more convenient than the train as the Siena train station is about 2 km outside of town. There are direct buses from various cities to Siena such as:

From Florence to Siena – The SITA bus company runs regular services from Santa Maria Novella train station to Siena. Journey time is 1 hr 20 minutes and the bus drops off at Piazza Garibaldi, within the city walls. The return journey departs Siena from Piazza Gramsci.
From Perugia – Our coach journey from Perugia to Siena took 1 hr 40 minutes.
From Rome (Tiburtina station) and Milan the bus journey takes approximately 3 hours and 4.5 hours, respectively.

By Car

Cars are not permitted in the historical centre. If your hotel is in the historical centre, you will need to get specific instructions from your hotel, as well as a permission slip from your hotel in advance. Get your hotel to draw your travel route to the hotel for you as being a car-free town, it’s not easy to find your way out if you’ve taken the wrong turn. If you’re parking outside the city walls, there are various parking areas, but be aware that parking can be expensive, expect to pay about €40,00 per day, if not more.
